EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS
So we are now six days removed from the 88th Academy Awards…aka The Oscars…aka #OscarsSoWhite; arguably one of the most anticipated Academy Awards ever because there were no black actors, actresses, nor movies nominated. Many notable black entertainers decided to boycott the ceremonies in protest of the exclusion, which was totally understandable; there were even some white entertainers who chose to do the same. Everybody was up in arms! It was like watching the L.A. riots play out all over again except without the violence. The stigma that black people & justice were not equals slapped us in the face like Rick James (Dave Chappelle) slapping Charlie Murphy!
Upon initially hearing the about the boycott…I was all in, but after I let it manifest I was like "wait…you're doing what?!?" Why now? Why in 2016? This was number 88…meaning the slight towards our black actors has been trending in such a manner for eons! There were definitely some snubs, but don't we get snubbed damn near every year? Of the 71 nominations (historically) for best actor, actress, or movie we've only walked away with 14 awards. According to my math that's a whopping 19.7%...OUCH! So it was quickly noted that the Academy Awards president was Cheryl Boone Isaacs (black woman) & Reginald Hudlin (black man) was 1 of 2 the directors/producers of the event. Now I don't keep up with the Oscars like that, but I never recall hearing who the president nor director was for the event until this year…hmmmm. So who do they get to host this soliloquy of chaos? None other than the always abrasive, always giving it to you 100 (whether you like it or not)…Chris Rock.
The "don't do it Chris" started to chime in like a We Are The World chorus! I don't think folks realized who they were aiming those comments towards…that's Chris Rock & he lives for these type of moments. What would've been the statement Chris made had he gave up the position of hosting the ceremony? Last time I checked, Chris Rock has never came close to sniffing an Academy Award! He has barely made movies that we can name; 'Top 5' is probably his best work to date & that came after being in the business damn near 30 years. And let's not forget, this was his second time being the host of the awards. He hosted the 77th Academy Awards, which was the same year Jamie Foxx (Ray) & Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda) were both nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role with Foxx winning respectively. Foxx was also nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Collateral) , Morgan Freeman was in the same category (Million Dollar Baby), & Sophie Okonedo was nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Hotel Rwanda). And I didn't even realize until I started researching that 'Tupac: The Resurrection' had been nominated…whoooa! Chris was the same guy that hosted the Oscars that year as he was 6 days ago; nothing changed except for the fact there were no brothers or sisters nominated this time around. He was dissin' the Oscars, he was dissin' black movies, white movies, George Bush, white & black actors, hip hop…you get the picture. He did the exact same thing 6 days ago & a lot of black people lost their everlasting minds! "He's cooning"…"Uncle Tom"…"he's mocking slavery!" Are you kidding me? Did you happen to see the 2014 BET Awards? That same guy was the host! Have you ever watched an episode of 'Everybody Hates Chris'? Do you realize the issuestackled on each & every episode? It's arguably one of the best black tv shows to come down the pipes! You know who was the creator, writer, & executive producer of the show? Yup…that SAME guy; but now he's the monster in the room for hosting the Oscars in 2016…go figure! Stones are being casted at the brother like he was the one who made sure no black actors, actresses, or movies were nominated. Chris gave the Oscars exactly what they didn't want…more light shined on the bullshit! If we've become the self-sufficient giants that we claim to be then why after 87 years are we still awaiting acceptance from an entity that doesn't give a damn about what we contribute year in & year out? No Oscar nominations for us this year & EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS! And once again I ask…WHY?
Just a lil' food for thought!
Gone!
